Stratford Phoenix Aikido began in April 2002 under the guidance and instruction of
Ric Costigan sensei, 4th Dan YAUK, and since then has grown progressively into a young and thriving club that is regularly attended by its members twice weekly, with additional visits to and from Coventry Phoenix.

Ric at Brussels   Ric Costigan started Aikido in February 1977 when first introduced to Tom Moss Sensei, and, having gained his 1st Dan in 1982 while studying under him, taught for many years and rose to become one of the senior instructors at Coventry Phoenix. He gained his 4th Dan in 2000 and qualified as a National Coach through the British Aikido Board.

While visits to Brussels were almost mandatory in the 70s & 90s for Dan grading seminars with Thielemans Sensei, Ric Costigan has also attended numerous courses over the years where the likes of William Smith Shihan, Hadyn Foster Sensei, Osamu Obata Shihan & Ken Cottier Shihan as well as Tom Moss Sensei have been guest instructors, whose Aikido pedigrees are and have been invaluable to him.

I try to put into practice all the elements of Aikido that I have been shown, with an emphasis on the spirited flowing movement of techniques, in an effort to try to capture the vitality of the Aikido that Tom Moss Sensei possessed, so that all of those that I teach or train with can be instilled in his way. It was he who opened my eyes to what Aikido has to offer, but some 30 years on I still strive to attain that level which provides the answers – I suppose there’s a long way left to go! ” - Ric Costigan.   Sensei Ric Costigan

Our club is open to all friends, new and old, who wish to visit us, and a warm welcome will be extended by all members of Stratford Phoenix Aikido. Training is currently limited to seniors/adults but a strong junior section is available at Coventry Phoenix, so please contact them there.
